What Are My Options for Sedation for my Oral Surgery?

Nitrous Oxide Sedation, or Minimal Sedation

Commonly known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide has been used for decades as a safe and effective option for dental sedation. Nitrous oxide sedation is a safe choice for both adults and children who experience dental anxiety.
Nitrous oxide sedation involves using a mask to deliver the nitrous oxide to the patient. The patient wears a mask over the nose and takes several deep breaths. It only takes a few moments for it to take effect, and it wears off quickly, meaning you should be able to drive yourself to and from the appointment.

What is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is the next level of sedation. The dental process involves the use of medication that is taken orally, typically in the form of a pill. Oral sedation is a heavier sedation compared to nitrous oxide gas, and some patients may find they feel very drowsy throughout their appointment.

Because oral sedation tends to make patients drowsier, it is required to have someone drive you home from your appointment, as it will take longer for the medication to wear off. It is also recommended that you give yourself the remainder of the day to recover.

IV Sedation, or Moderate Sedation

IV sedation, sometimes referred to as conscious or twilight sedation, involves placing an IV line to allow for the quick and efficient delivery of the medication. Patients who choose IV sedation remain responsive but drowsy for the entirety of the procedure.
Most patients sleep through the procedure and have no memory or little memory of the treatment. Your vital signs will be closely monitored throughout the appointment to ensure your safety.
IV sedation also requires that you have nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to the procedure, have a driver bring you to the appointment, stay throughout treatment, and drive you home. You will also need to plan for rest for the remainder of the day to allow the medication to wear off. Your candidacy for IV sedation can be assessed at the consultation appointment.

Pre-Sedation Instructions at Mansfield Oral Surgery

  • Do not eat or drink 8 hours prior to your scheduled appointment this includes water
  • A responsible adult, over the age of 18, must escort you both to and from the office as well as staying during the duration of the procedure
  • For minors, a legal parent or guardian must be your escort
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to both your arms. Do not wear long sleeve shirts
  • Discuss with the doctor medications that you are taking daily and if they can be taken the day of your appointment
