The Benefits of Choosing Dental Implants Over Dentures

Conveniently located to serve Mansfield, Arlington, Midlothian, Burleson and surrounding cities

Two of the best known tooth replacement options are dentures and dental implants. While both options can provide functional and cosmetic improvements, dental implants have become the preferred treatment approach over dentures for the replacement of missing teeth, due to their many benefits.

Every patient is unique, so the optimal tooth replacement treatment for you will depend on your specific needs and/or preferences. Understanding the differences between dental implants and dentures is the first step in being able to make an informed decision for your care. The next step is to consult with a qualified dental provider, like board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Franklin Awah at Mansfield Oral Surgery.

Tooth Replacement with Dentures

Dentures are prosthetic teeth that are custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth and look like natural teeth. A specialized adhesive is used to secure dentures to the gums, and they must be removed and cleaned regularly. Dentures can be made from a variety of materials like porcelain, acrylic, and resin.

There are two types of dentures: full dentures and partial dentures. Full dentures are designed to replace an entire row of teeth, and partial dentures are made to fit around remaining teeth while replacing teeth that are missing from the upper or lower jaw.

Tooth Replacement with Dental Implants

Dental implants are medical devices that are surgically affixed to the jawbone. The implant post is made of titanium and is designed to act as the roots of a missing tooth. It can be fitted with a crown once it has fused with the jawbone. Dental implants can also anchor bridges and fixed or snap-on dentures.

Fixed dentures screw into a dental implant post and can only be removed by a dentist. Snap-on dentures also require the placement of implant posts, which the denture is then snapped onto. Snap-on dentures can be removed by the patient.

Dental Implants vs. Dentures

Dental implants are only suitable for patients with adequate jawbone density, so for some patients, dentures are the best tooth replacement method. Additionally, dental implants may not be right for patients who prefer not to undergo oral surgery or are unable to for medical or other reasons.

For patients who meet the candidacy requirements, dental implants offer a number of benefits over dentures in terms of functionality and long-term oral health:

Functionality – Dental implants are sturdier and more stable than dentures thanks to their titanium “roots.” Removable dentures cannot offer the same degree of comfort and functionality, as they are not anchored to the jawbone like a natural tooth.

Oral health – Dental implants prevent jawbone deterioration that occurs after losing a tooth, while normal dentures will not prevent this issue.

Reliability – Dental implants also last longer than dentures. They are durable and with proper maintenance can last as long as your natural teeth. Dental implants do not normally need to be replaced. Dentures are more fragile than implants and can often break or become damaged due to wear and tear or other accidents.
